Newcastle Jets honored the memory of former player Steven Laybutt in the best way possible on Tuesday night.

Thankfully, Newcastle didn't have to wait long.

Piscopo earned a free kick for a nasty foul. Costa Grossos delivered a great cross from a set-piece situation, which Apostolos Stamatelopoulos headed home to make it 1-0.

The Jets had another chance when Piscopo failed to convert after a fast break.

Newcastle keeper Ryan Scott then came into play at the other end of the field, making a great save to deny Jonas Markowski.

The visitors suffered a major setback when referee Daniel Cook harshly handed Jay O'Shea a red card in stoppage time following VAR intervention.

The Jets kept their cool and drove into the shed with a 1-0 lead.

In the 54th minute, Lukas Mauragis and Wilmering combined to score Stamatelopoulos, making it 2-0.

He made no mistake and scored goal number 10 of the 2023/24 season, giving us a 2-0 advantage.

In the blink of an eye, Newcastle were up 3-0.

Stamatelopoulos fired a powerful shot and lofted a pass to Mauragis, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

To Roa's credit, they failed to surrender.

In the 71st minute, Ayom Majoku scored his first goal in ALM, reducing the gap to 3-1.

Nikola Mileusnic then had two chances to score, but Scott and Dane Ingham desperately kept Brisbane at bay.

The host team then regained control of the situation and won the long-awaited victory.

The Jets' next game will be against the Wellington Phoenix on Saturday, January 27th at McDonald Jones Stadium.
